Sunderland goalkeeper Alex Bass left Newcastle raging by producing a late Hand of God moment in the sides' under-21s encounter.

At St James’ Park, the two rivals played out a 1-1 draw. Joe White's strike gave the Magpies the lead in the first-half before the Black Cats’ shot-stopper netted in using his hand in the 95th minute following a rebound from the post after a corner was swung in..

The goal was allowed to stand by the referee, but after the match, the 24-year-goal-scorer admitted that he had actually used his hand to put the ball into the net.

“I didn’t really know what to do to be honest,” said Bass when asked about the game-levelling goal.

“I have to admit I did handball it so didn’t think it was going to be given. I’ve headed it onto the post and kind of fallen over and scooped it in.

“I was kind of running off in a little bit of shame and then all the boys came over and the ref has given it.”

Down the other end, Bass was then called into action and made a great save to earn his side a point on the road.

The goal has drawn a resemblance to Diego Maradona’s Hand of God goal scored against England in the 1986 World Cup. The Argentine attacker infamously rose above Peter Shilton and nudged the ball into the net with his hand.

Maradona subsequently claimed he scored by the ‘Hand of God.’ Sunderland riffed on the similarity between the strikes by proclaiming Bass' equaliser to be the 'Hand of Cod.'

But Newcastle United under-21s head coach Elliott Dickman said he noticed the handball from watching replays. He said via the official club site: "I've had a look back and from my point of view, I think it is a handball. He (Bass) gets a free header, it hits the post, comes back and he bundles the ball over with the use of his arm.

"It might've happened too quickly for the referee to see but, looking back on the footage, no matter how slow or in real time it is, I'm not too sure they score if he doesn't bundle it across with his hand.”
