Stoke 1-2 Brentford: Ivan Toney ends mini-goal drought as Bees star and Sergi Canos score to send west Londoners through to Carabao Cup quarter-finals

  • Romaine Sawyers pulled a goal back for the Potters in the second-half

Revelling in their debut season in the Premier League and now into the last eight of the Carabao Cup, life could not be going much better for buoyant Brentford.

With main man Ivan Toney back among the goals after four games, Thomas Frank could be very pleased with his side’s work.

Despite making eight changes, the Bees produced a smooth display to reach the quarter-finals for the second successive season and just the second time in their history.

Sergi Canos put the Bees in front on 22 minutes with a low finish from the edge of the area

The west London side were at it from the off and Toney almost put them in front inside two minutes. But they deserved their lead when it arrived midway through the half. Toney laid a corner back to Sergi Canos, who drilled in from the edge of the area.

Having been provider, captain-for-the-night Toney was the scorer for the second as he beat Joe Bursik at his near post after Stoke had lost possession from their own throw-in.

Romaine Sawyers pulled one back early in the second half with a fine half-volley from 18 yards, but the Bees held on for a deserved victory.

This was a fourth straight defeat for Stoke and, after slipping out of the play-off spots, the focus is back on the league for Michael O’Neill’s men.
