Manchester United don’t want Jesse Lingard back and will sell him in the summer transfer window, it has been claimed. The England international has sparkled at West Ham, scoring six goals and registering two assists from eight games so far. But, despite that, his time at the Theatre of Dreams appears to be over.

Back in January, United decided to loan Lingard out.

The midfielder had struggled for matches under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, often being behind the likes of Paul Pogba, Donny van de Beek and Bruno Fernandes in the pecking order.

But, since Lingard’s exit, the England international has revived his career at West Ham.

The 28-year-old has scored six times for the Hammers so far to boost their chances of finishing in the Premier League top four, something that once seemed impossible.

That’s led to talk he could return to United, who may find themselves losing Pogba or Van de Beek when the transfer window reopens.

Yet Ian McGarry, speaking on the Transfer Window podcast, have claimed United will sell regardless of what Lingard does in the coming weeks and months ahead.

He said: “Jesse Lingard is a player who’s been rejected by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, sent out on loan to West Ham United, has proved himself to be something of a scoring sensation, none more so than last weekend.

“And it seems that though the player is under contract, United are prepared to play a waiting game, because it’s our information that they will wait until Lingard is named – or not – in England’s Euro 2020 squad this summer.

“And if he is, then they’ll wait again, so that the possibility of his increase in value gives them an advantage in terms of income, and therefore he will be allowed to leave the club despite his very impressive form at the Olympic Stadium, and that would be the case regardless of who United try to buy.”

Lingard appeared a player down and out just months ago.

But his terrific turnaround has been one of the most surprising turnarounds of the season.

He’s set to be a wanted man this summer, with Leicester also joining West Ham in the race to sign the playmaker on a permanent basis.

And, should United lose Lingard, they promote from within to fill the void left behind by any potential departure.

Hannibal Mejbri has been tipped to replace the Hammers star in the squad and, speaking recently, Solskjaer hinted the midfielder could make his debut before the end of the season.

“Yes, definitely,” he said when asked if Hannibal could make a match day squad soon.

“He was unlucky getting injured, six weeks ago, when he was supposed to come up [to train] with us. Now he’s got over the injury and joined in, and he’s done well, the boy.

“Of course, you drip-feed them in and you don’t expect them to set the world alight, but you want to see them in this environment and he’s looked comfortable and confident.

“Hopefully, we can give him that extra motivation and inspiration to show even more of his talent and why not?”

TalkSPORT pundit Simon Jordan, meanwhile, thinks West Ham stand ‘no chance’ of signing Lingard on a permanent basis.

“Not a chance,” he said.

“I just don’t see where there is a parallel universe where they’re going to get Lingard to West Ham or they’re going to get the economics of the Lingard deal to West Ham.

“What West Ham have achieved is putting Lingard back on the map, giving Lingard a stage where he can play at the level that clearly he’s capable of.

“All that will do is increase the cost implications of getting him in the first place.

“[If Lingard wants to join West Ham permanently] what Manchester United will say is, ‘that’s great, you can go there if you want to, that’s £60m’.

“They’ll enter discussions. Then maybe it’ll be £30m or £40m. Maybe Man United will do a deal with Lingard that involves him signing a long-term contract to protect their interests.”
