Steward punched in the nose as Swansea and Coventry fans brawl in the stands

A steward was punched in the face while trying to break up a brawl between Coventry and Swansea supporters during Friday's Championship clash between the two sides.

The game ended 0-0, with both sides missing out on the chance to close the gap between themselves and the top six, but the encounter was ultimately marred by the violence in the stands.

More than 2,000 Sky Blues fans made their way down to south Wales for the match, and tempers flared near the away end during the second half after a Coventry supporter leaped over the barrier to get at the home fans.

A number of stewards raced over to separate the yobs, with one of them – a middle-aged man – getting accidentally hit in the face for his troubles.

His hat was knocked off and he was pictured holding his nose in pain as the fans continued brawling, with a female steward forced to risk injury by jumping in and dragging one of the men away.

It's not the first time Swansea fans have been involved in trouble recently. Last weekend, the club had to a issue a statement slamming the behaviour of a "minority of supporters" following "several incidents of disruption and anti-social behaviour" during their 3-2 win over rivals Cardiff.

Swansea look set to remain in the Championship for another season, with the team lying in 15th place and 11 points off a play-off spot.

Coventry, however, are still in with a chance of promotion. They're currently ninth in the league and just three points off sixth-place. But with just seven points separating fifth and 12th, it's still all to play for.
