Steven Gerrard targeting Liverpool for his latest Aston Villa transfer pursuit
Aston Villa manager Steven Gerrard is plotting a raid on former side Liverpool as he looks to bolster his squad before the transfer window slams shut next week.
Having already brought in Phillipe Coutinho and Lucas Digne, Aston Villa have been one of the most active sides during the window – and it looks like their spending spree is far from over.
According to reports, Gerrard is a big fan of Liverpool defender Joe Gomez and is keen to bring him to Villa Park.
The England international is struggling to nail down a starting spot in Jurgen Klopp's side – particularly as both Virgil van Dijk and Joel Matip have been fit all season – and he's fallen even further down the pecking order since the summer arrival of Ibrahima Konate.
Gomez has only just recovered from a long-term knee injury, but the writing may well be on the wall for him at Anfield given that he's featured just four times for the Reds in the Premier League this season.
The former Charlton man was a regular in the side during Liverpool's run to the title in 2019/20, but lost his place when Matip returned from injury.
Meanwhile, Villa centre backs Tyrone Mings and Ezra Konsa have been in decent form this season, but Gerrard will be eager to add some much-needed depth to his back-line, especially since Axel Tuanzebe's loan spell was cut short at the start of the month.
Gerrard's interest in Gomez also stems from the 24-year-old's versatility and there are hopes he can fill in at full-back if needed.

Commenting on Gomez's situation earlier this month, Jurgen Klopp said: "It was not the best year for Joe with the injury and then coming back.
"We have not rushed his recovery or rehab. When you start playing and training again we had three or four 100% fit centre halves.
"We are patient and Joe is patient. And I don’t have any plans to give anyone on loan in the winter. I will not be the driving force anyway. He still needs time to train to get to where he was before."
