Steven Gerrard was spotted at the Stade Velodrome on Wednesday night, with the Aston Villa manager reportedly scouting Marseille’s defensive midfielder Boubacar Kamara as they beat Nantes 3-2.

Gerrard has prioritised signing a new holding midfielder as he looks to reshape his squad this summer, with Villa struggling for form in 2022.

Sportsmail revealed last month that the club are willing to sell Brazil international Douglas Luiz, with Gerrard unimpressed by his performances at the base of midfield as his side have slumped to nine defeats in their last 15 matches.

Kamara, 22, is rated as one of the best young defensive midfielders in Europe and RMC report that he was the reason for Gerrard’s visit to Marseille this week.

Gerrard, who was pictured sitting alongside Villa chief executive Christian Purslow and director of football Johan Lange, is a fan of Leeds’ Kalvin Phillips but the club would have to fork out £60m to lure him away from his hometown club.

The Liverpool legend and former Rangers manager is hoping to seal a permanent deal for loanee Philippe Coutinho, but Villa hope to pay less than the £33m Barcelona are holding out for.

Gerrard also wants new additions out wide and up front ahead of his first full season in charge at Villa Park.
