Stan Collymore says Aston Villa CEO should go if ‘vanity pick’ Gerrard is fired

Stan Collymore has called for Aston Villa’s CEO to ‘go’ if Steven Gerrard is sacked this season.

The Villa manager has suffered a torrid start to the Premier League season, winning just one game out of four. Gerrard’s side were dismantled in a 3-1 defeat to Crystal Palace last week before suffering a 1-0 home defeat to West Ham on Sunday (August 28), when they were booed off.

That has left the Villains way down in 15th place in a season, when many would have expected them to kick on after avoiding relegation last campaign. Now pundit and former Villa striker Collymore has stated Gerrard should receive the same scrutiny that other managers have often faced in the media.

He wrote on Twitter: “SG under pressure. Will be interesting to see if he gets same scrutiny as other managers amongst friends in media who've been suspiciously absent in analysis thus far.”

Collymore then outright called for Villa CEO Christian Purslow to be removed from his position if Gerrard ended up being sacked.

He said: “If he [Gerrard] does fail then Purslow should go. Ignored a plethora of quality coaches for his own vanity pick.”

Collymore’s stern assessment comes in light of Purslow’s personal relationship with Gerrard, who he already knew well from his time as Liverpool’s managing director. And the pundit was joined by several fans in suggesting there were better options available when the England legend was appointed in November last year.

One supporter tweeted: “Aston Villa hired a manager who won 1 trophy from 9 in Scotland. No other manager in Scotland would walk into the Villa job with that record. A Hollywood appointment in name only”

Another wrote: “Should've gone all out for [Brighton manager Graham] Potter!” while a third added: “I’ll support him as long as he’s at the club but surely the owners have a decision to make! What worries me is he’s Purslow’s man, he may be reluctant to admit he failed.”
