Staggering drone footage of Buenos Aires has everyone wishing Maradona was there

Stunning drone footage has captured the joy of hundreds of thousands of Argentina fans who celebrated their World Cup heroics at the Plaza de la Republica in Buenos Aires – and were all wishing Diego Maradona was there with him.

With Lionel Messi and Angel Di Maria on target before Lionel Scaloni's side beat France on penalties in their Qatar final, Argentina fans back home congregated around the Obelisco de Buenos Aires.

With the sun beaming down on the huge crowds of people wearing the famous blue and white, film director and drone pilot Ale Petra got the best possible footage from above.

Using his drone, attached with a high-definition camera, the crowds could be seen in all their glory – to the delight of social media.

With one of his clips bringing in over a quarter of a million likes on Instagram, one fan said in response: "Tremendous video."

A second added: "How spectacular!!!" A third then wrote: "How beautiful Argentina looks."

While the fans celebrated in style, the players did the same in their Qatar dressing room – with a member of staff flipping into a wheelie bin.

In addition, Sergio Aguero lit up a cigar with Messi dancing on a table with the trophy and even posing with the tournament prize money cheque of £8.2million.

One notable absence from the celebrations was the late icon Maradona, as mentioned by Argentina boss Lionel Scaloni.

He said: "We are such a football passionate country and if he were here, he would have enjoyed it so much. I wish he was here to enjoy this moment."

Maradona carried Argentina to their second World Cup triumph back in 1986 and his face could be seen all over the country yesterday on flags and banners.

Messi can now be considered an equal to Maradona thanks to his own World Cup triumph – and has even pledged to carry on playing for his country despite being 35.
