Southampton 'make serious enquiry into Liverpool's Neco Williams'

Southampton ‘make serious enquiry into signing Liverpool full-back Neco Williams’ amid interest from Fulham, Nottingham Forest and PSV with the Reds ‘willing to let the defender leave for £20m’

  • Southampton have made an approach for Liverpool defender Neco Williams
  • The full-back made just one top-flight appearance for Jurgen Klopp’s side
  • But the Welshman impressed on loan at Fulham in the second half of the season
  • Williams will be eager to get minutes under his belt ahead of the World Cup

Southampton have reportedly made a ‘serious’ approach for Liverpool full-back Neco Williams.

The 21-year-old could leave Anfield in search of regular game time this summer amid interest from Fulham, Nottingham Forest, PSV Eindhoven and newcomers to the race Southampton.

Williams made just one appearance in the Premier League for Jurgen Klopp’s side last season and Liverpool are believed to be willing to let him leave for a package that adds up to £20million, according to Sky Sports.

With the defender’s future at Anfield uncertain, the reports adds that Saints have made an inquiry into signing him.

Dutch side PSV have previously wanted to sign him on loan and are said to have also inquired this summer but the interest from Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side is believed to be more serious.

However, both sides will face competition from Premier League new boys Fulham and Nottingham Forest.

The Welshman impressed on loan at Fulham during the second half of last season

Williams spent the second half of last season on loan at Fulham and delivered a number of impressive performances to help the Cottagers gain promotion to the Premier League.

Williams has since returned to Anfield, but his chances of getting more game time have been dented by the Reds bringing in Calvin Ramsay from Aberdeen.

The Scottish teenager now looks set to provide back-up for Trent Alexander-Arnold moving forward, which could open the door for Williams to leave permanently.

A return to Fulham could be on the cards, while Forest are keen to entice him to the City Ground, potentially as a replacement for Djed Spence, who flourished on loan from Middlesbrough last term.

Williams is also said to have a long-standing relationship and admiration for Forest boss Steve Cooper.

All interested parties were handed a boost following reports Liverpool have told the Wales international that he can leave the club on a temporary basis this summer.

The full-back will be looking to increase his pitch-time ahead of Wales’s World Cup campaign

Williams will be looking for regular minutes next season in the build-up to the World Cup and the Reds are said to be willing to let him go out on loan to help increase his on-pitch time, rather than continuing to play second fiddle to Alexander-Arnold.

Williams helped Wales qualify for the World Cup for the first time in 64 years by beating Ukraine in the play-offs earlier this month.

He is a pivotal part of Robert Page’s team and is expected to start each of Wales’ group games against England, Iran and the USA.
