Southampton initially wanted to sign Jackson, who has scored twice in 14 LaLiga appearances this season, on loan with an option to buy.

It now looks as though boss Jones will make it a permanent switch during the January transfer window to add to his options in attack.

They’ve already managed to capture the signature of Croatia World Cup star Mislav Orsic from Dinamo Zagreb, but they are expected to remain active in the market.

The Saints are also keen to add a right-back with Luton Town’s James Bree being one of their main targets.

The 25-year-old has made 27 appearances in all competitions for the Hatters and has picked up four assists during that time.

Bree played under current Saints boss Jones with the Hatters among over 140 appearances for the Championship club.

Current Luton boss Rob Edwards admitted: ‘There’s nothing that I know of at the moment, but like I said before, nothing would surprise me.

‘He’s a really good player and obviously he’ll be out of contract in the summer. I don’t know, I’m not aware of anything at the moment.

‘With his situation, there’s always that possibility but what we’ll always do is try and make sure we do what’s right for the football club, and there’s an individual within that, a human being in that as well.’

Tottenham youngster Djed Spence is another option to have been discussed though he is also wanted by Lyon.

The French side are expecting offers for their right back Malo Gusto, 19, who has attracted attention from Chelsea among others.
