Souness says Henderson will replace De Gea in goal for Man United
Graeme Souness claims ‘it’s only a matter of time’ before Dean Henderson replaces David de Gea in goal for Manchester United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘can only tolerate Spaniard’s mistakes for so long’
- David de Gea has been criticised since making two mistakes against Everton
- Dean Henderson is waiting in the wings for his opportunity at Old Trafford
- Graeme Souness is confident Henderson will replace De Gea in a matter of time
- Gary Neville feels the situation needs to be resolved for United to go for the title
Graeme Souness has claimed that it is only ‘a matter of time’ before Dean Henderson replaces David de Gea in goal for Manchester United.
The Sky Sports pundit’s comments come in the wake of two costly mistakes made by the Spaniard as United relinquished a 3-1 lead, to draw 3-3 against Everton.
Questions have been raised over De Gea due to his drop in performance levels and an increasing number of mistakes in recent seasons.
Graeme Souness says it’s a ‘matter of time’ before Dean Henderson replaces David de Gea
Souness said Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can only tolerate De Gea’s mistakes for so long
Souness said that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer can only tolerate his mistakes for so long.
He said: ‘I’m a fan of Dean Henderson. It’s only a matter of time. You look at Sheffield United’s plight, he is the single biggest reason why they are where they are.
‘David de Gea is making mistakes, a manager can only tolerate that for so long. If the goalkeeper is making mistakes, it impacts the rest of the team.’
Manchester United’s legendary right-back, Gary Neville, has also questioned the 30-year-old shot-stopper.
He told the Webby and O’Neill YouTube channel that his former team-mate Solskjaer ‘needs to deal’ with the club’s goalkeeper situation
Neville added that if Jurgen Klopp or Pep Guardiola were managers of United, that they would immediately sign a new goalkeeper.
Ahead of United’s Premier League match with West Brom, he said: ‘There’s a real problem brewing for Ole in the next few months. He has Henderson issues building behind De Gea.
There comes a point where (De Gea) is making mistakes too regularly. Man United need to win a title, no team can win a title without a great goalkeeeper.
‘David de Gea was a great goalkeeper, but it’s not just the mistakes he’s making – the saves are less. He’s not the same level he has been.’
Gary Neville says De Gea is no longer at the same level he was several seasons ago
The Red Devils go into their game against West Brom eight points off leaders Manchester City.
With Pep Guardiola’s side looking unbeatable at the moment, United need to pick up their consistency and hope City drop points if they are to mount a title challenge.
Sky Sports pundit Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink added: ‘Alisson is having a bad time but last year he was one of the best in the league or the year before. He saved them time and time again. If Man United is going to progress and go for the title they have to address that position.
‘Or he (De Gea) has to go and play better or Henderson will get an opportunity and it’s up to Henderson. I don’t know if Henderson is good enough for the title but the goalkeeper coach will.
‘He works day in, day out. Normally you know what kind of character he has. If De Gea keeps on making mistakes, Hendo will get his opportunity and we will see.’
