Souness downs England with brutal ‘coming home’ dig after Scotland secure draw
Graeme Souness has downed England with a brutal dig aimed at those hoping football will “come home” this summer at Euro 2020.
The Three Lions were held to a turgid goalless draw by Scotland on Friday night, with Gareth Southgate’s side struggling to turn their dominance of possession into chances.
One of the recurring issues of England’s campaign in the tournament so far has been the downturn in form of star striker Harry Kane.
The England captain barely had a kick against Steve Clarke’s side at Wembley, following up his poor display against Croatia, with Southgate substituting him off in both matches.
Kane has looked noticeably off the pace so far for his country, with the transfer saga over his future still raging.
Former Scotland international Souness blasted Kane’s performances in the tournament so far and launched a dig at England fans.
“Harry doesn’t look himself, he looks shady and looks tired,” he told ITV.
“This is a guy who’s hoping to get a big move this summer, he needs to wake himself up. He came off in the first game, is he carrying something? Because he looks a shadow of himself.
How far will England get at Euro 2020? Comment below.
“He’s England’s one player who has proven at this level to get goals on a regular basis and if that’s not happening in this competition – you’re not going very far.
“Without Harry Kane – football isn’t coming home with that team, I can tell you, not the way they’re playing.”
But Souness does not believe Kane’s struggles are solely down to the Tottenham man, with the former Liverpool boss also critical of the service he is getting from his team-mates.
“The centre-backs had an easy night against him. Harry Kane looks a shadow of the player we know he is,” Souness added.
“In two games, as Roy said, he looks leggy, lacking enthusiasm, I know a centre-forward, really, is 90% reliant on the type of passes he’s getting and he’s not getting a great deal from that midfield.”
