The Everest: Inglis has ‘unfinished business’ after sticking with Gytrash for world’s richest turf race

Gytrash, the giant-killer of Australian sprinting, is getting another chance at the $15m The TAB Everest.

Slot-holder Inglis announced on Friday it has again selected Gytrash as their runner in the world’s richest turf race.

Trained by Gordon Richards, Gytrash now joins Nature Strip (slot holder Chris Waller Racing), Masked Crusader (Max Whitby, Neil Werrett and Col Madden) and Lost And Running (TAB) as confirmed starters in The Everest at Royal Randwick on October 16.

Defending champion Classique Legend is back in light work at trainer Les Bridge’s Randwick stables and is certain to be selected in owner Bon Ho’s Everest slot.

Gytrash ran in the Inglis slot last year and finished third behind Classique Legend and Bivouac before backing up to win the Yes Yes Yes Stakes at Rosehill.

Richards said he was relieved to have secured Gytrash his place in the elite 12-horse field for The Everest next spring.

“We had a gentlemen’s agreement when we left last year with Inglis and they are quite happy to stay with us,’’ Richards said.

“By getting the deal done now, it gives us certainty because he’s in The Everest. We don’t have to showcase him in Sydney this year to show he is the real deal.

“We will do things a bit differently this spring and have only the one lead-up race in The Shorts then go four weeks into The Everest which should be ideal.’’

Inglis managing director Mark Webster said it was a unanimous choice of his team to go with Gytrash again for The Everest.

“We really do believe there is unfinished business with Gytrash,’’ Webster said.

“This horse has remarkable ability. Of course, he has now been placed top three 22 times out of 24 starts.

“As we look at The Everest field as it stands today, the five horses locked in are all Inglis graduates.’’

Gytrash has only raced twice this year for a close third in the Group 1 The Goodwood before a luckless effort when unplaced in the Group 1 Kingsford-Smith Cup.

“His run in Adelaide was very good but he had no luck in Brisbane,’’ Richards said.

“He did drew wide at Eagle Farm but he was about to unwind in the straight when he got poleaxed.

“But he pulled up really well and I’m confident he’s still the same horse that raced in Sydney last year.’’

Richards said Gytrash is currently spelling in the Hawkesbury region and will stay in NSW to be prepared for The Everest.

“Gytrash will return to work on July 1 and we will stay at Warwick Farm again during the spring,’’ the trainer said.
