Solskjaer’s solution to online trolls after Man Utd trio racially abused

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer says online trolls who racially abuse players need to be forcibly removed from social media.

Marcus Rashford became the latest Manchester United player to be subjected to racist abuse following Saturday's 0-0 draw at Arsenal.

That came after Axel Tuanzebe and Anthony Martial were targeted by vile racist trolls in the wake of United's shock 2-1 defeat at home to the Premier League's bottom club Sheffield United.

"I don't think this is just a matter of footballers or famous people [being targeted], it's just that it gets highlighted, which is, in a sense, good that we talk about it and highlight it," said Solskjaer.

"But it's unacceptable behaviour and it happens all across society.

"We work with the authorities and it has to be stopped, this way of discrimination on social media.

"We can't do a lot, we just have to work with the platforms, and they've got to make sure we're stronger to stop this.

"We all know there's freedom of speech, but this crosses a line of what is acceptable – this is unacceptable behaviour in 2021.

"The ignorance, you feel sorry for them, you've just got to help them and sometimes you help them by taking away the chance to express themselves."

Marcus Rashford was also subjected to discriminatory abuse following Saturday's 0-0 draw with Arsenal.

The 22-year-old – who has campaigned admirably to help disadvantaged children over the last year – took to Twitter to issue a defiant response.

"Humanity and social media at its worst," he wrote. "Yes I’m a black man and I live every day proud that I am.

"No one, or no one comment, is going to make me feel any different. So sorry if you were looking for a strong reaction, you’re just simply not going to get it here.

"I’m not sharing screenshots. It would be irresponsible to do so and as you can imagine there’s nothing original in them.

"I have beautiful children of all colours following me and they don’t need to read it. Beautiful colours that should only be celebrated."
