Solskjaer’s bond with Haaland had ‘cooled’ – Man Utd can still sign £64m star

Manchester United believe that they can still sign highly rated star Erling Haaland, even with the dismissal of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Haaland was close to joining United two years ago but chose Borussia Dortmund instead, and sources have claimed that Solskjaer's relationship with the striker was not as healthy following the collapsed move.

The forward's £64million release clause is set to become active in 2022, and it is expected that he will leave Dortmund this summer as the whole of Europe awaits the ultimate war for his signature.

United are still confident that they can sign the star, and they've been boosted by recent events.

They may not have the Norwegian connection through Solskjaer anymore, but United have gone one better as new interim boss Ralf Rangnick helped bring Haaland to Red Bull Salzburg from Molde back in 2018.

Rangnick has kept a relationship with Haaland's father and has reportedly spoke to him about the possibility of his son signing for United next year.

A striker became a top priority for United last year and with Anthony Martial now saying that he wants to leave, the Red Devils may look to bring in Haaland as they look to build for the long-term, and Rangnick is quite the admirer.

"Erling Haaland is a fantastic striker," Rangnick said at his first United press conference three weeks ago. "I know best myself, because I was together with the people at Salzburg with my friend Kristoff and the people there were a little bit involved in the move from Molde to Salzburg, and therefore I know what kind of player he is."

And Haaland's agent has said that his client is very much open to many potentialities in the future, issuing a 'come and get me' plea to Europe's elite.

Mino Raiola told NOS: "He can wait for anybody. We don't have a pre-agreement with any club. We'll look for the best option for him and I can't rule out another year at Dortmund. Theoretically, that's still possible."
