Gary Neville rips into Bruno Fernandes after Liverpool rout

‘I’ve had ENOUGH of him throwing his arms around; I’ve had enough of him not running back; he WHINGES at everybody’: Gary Neville rips ’embarrassing’ Bruno Fernandes for antics in Liverpool’s 7-0 mauling and says he FAILED as Man United captain

  • Bruno Fernandes was labelled an embarrassment to Man United at Liverpool
  • Jurgen Klopp’s Reds pulled off a stunning 7-0 rout of their rivals at Anfield
  • Gary Neville was furious with Man United’s captain for his constant whinging

Gary Neville has ripped into Bruno Fernandes for ‘throwing his arms around’ and constantly whinging after a shambolic captain’s performance in the 7-0 mauling by Liverpool.

Labelled by Sportsmail’s Chris Sutton as one of the worst displays ever by a Premier League player, Fernandes was singled out in the aftermath by Neville for failing in his role as Manchester United captain.

‘I’m going to start with Bruno Fernandes,’ a fuming Neville said on Sky Sports

‘I’ve had enough of him throwing his arms around at his team-mates; I’ve had enough of him not running back; he whinges at everybody.’

He added: ‘He got pushed in the chest and went down holding his face. He’s got to put a captain’s performance in out there and that wasn’t a captain’s performance by a Manchester United player.’

Neville called the Portuguese superstar ’embarrassing’ for his playacting in defeat at Anfield

Fernandes, who was also labelled a ‘disgrace’ by Neville in the post-mortem at Anfield, appeared to wave his arms in discontent when Erik ten Hag did not take him off late in the game.

His effort level was also called into question as United shipped six second half goals for one of their most humiliating results ever.

‘Fernandes’s body language today was disgraceful,’ fellow pundit Roy Keane added.

‘He’s a really talented boy, he’s your captain. But his body language, waving his arms not running back, you wouldn’t be happy with him.’

The Portuguese midfielder is not averse to letting his team-mates have it and he is often very animated on the pitch in his demeanour – but neither Keane nor Neville were having it at Anfield.

There was one incindent in particular whereby Fernandes jockeyed for possession with Liverpool defender Ibrahima Konate, only to be brushed off by the Frenchman.

Konate pushed Fernandes in the chest, only for the Portuguese to go down clutching his face.

‘Touches the chest, he holds his face, that’s embarrassing from Bruno Fernandes,’ Neville fumed.

Rival fans taunted that he deserved an ‘oscar’ for his theatrics.

‘Some of Fernandes’ behaviour in this half has been a disgrace,’ Neville said after the first 45 minutes. By the end he was even more appalled before trying to shift the focus onto how United rise from this.

‘I think Erik ten Hag will deal with them very strongly in the next 24-48 hours, he’s done that a few times already this season,’ Neville added.

‘I’d hope normal service will be resumed by the end of next week.’

Fernandes fronted up in a post-match interview and told Sky Sports that Liverpool’s defeat was a ‘really bad result’ for him and his team-mates to take.

‘It’s frustrating. It’s a really bad result, we came here with a different mindset.

‘The first half was really good, we controlled most of it, the second half was nit at our level,’ Fernandes said.

‘We give too much space away. We know what a threat they are.

‘It was not our level. We know we can be better. Its just about going to the next game.

‘The team tries to react but we lost a bit of balance and control.

United need to quickly regroup ahead of a Europa League clash against Real Betis this week

‘We gave too much space to a team that is strong on the counter. The games our coming quick.

‘We know this team is really good and can do really good things. We have set a really good standard for ourselves, now its just about getting back to that.

‘We are still in the Europa League and A Cup, we have to get back on track.’

‘We are in the hunt to win the next game against [Real] Betis. We have to go game by game,’ added the Portuguese.
