Solskjaer to unleash Man Utd masterplan to expose ‘nervy’ Liverpool weakness

Manchester United are flying high ahead of Sunday's "great test" at reigning Premier League champions Liverpool.

Against the odds, the Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's Red Devils are top of the league following their hard-fought win over Burnley on Tuesday night.

The result saw United go top at this stage of the season for the first time since Sir Alex Ferguson bowed out as champion in 2012-13, giving them a three-point cushion over Liverpool ahead of the trip to Anfield.

Solskjaer won six Premier League winners' medals during his time as a player at Old Trafford and undoubtedly knows what it takes to secure silverware at the club.

The manager also knows that their away form could prove decisive in their pursuit for a top-flight crown.

United are now unbeaten in 15 Premier League away fixtures, winning 12 of them, with their last defeat on the road coming at Anfield a year ago.

Last season, goals from from Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah sealed a win for Liverpool on their way to securing their first league triumph in 30 years.

Salah made sure of the three points as United chased the game late on and Solskjaer, speaking after the game, was only too aware of the mistakes made by his side.

After the loss, he said: “Of course, you’re never happy when you lose a game. The first goal was disappointing to concede, the goal from a set-piece.

"We didn’t deal with that well enough. In the last half hour I thought we were excellent.

”We pegged them back, pressed them, had the majority of the possession in the second half, pushed them back and created chances, big chances.

"And we created the pressure, I thought they looked nervy and then of course we send everyone up to get the equaliser and they get that goal."

Solskjaer sensed Liverpool's nerves but United were unable to take advantage of their pressure and they fell to a disappointing defeat.

This weekend, however, the boss will be hoping to unleash a similar masterplan that exposes the Reds' weaknesses.

United are undoubtedly more threatening on the counter-attack this season, while Liverpool's injury crisis has left them weak at the back.

And all eyes will be on Anfield as United look to go six points ahead of Liverpool, who moved an eye-watering 30 points clear of Solskjaer's side with a 2-0 victory when they last met last year.

"We're looking forward to it," the Norwegian said.

"Of course you enjoy being where we are at any time. If it's the first game or the last game, it's a big, big difference.

"But at the moment we are where we are. We're going to go in there knowing that we play against the team that's been by a mile the best in the country for the last year and a half.

"They're champions by right and we're looking forward to it and it's a great test of where we're at against a good team."
