Solskjaer says two refereeing decisions cost Man Utd against Sheffield Utd

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has pointed the finger at two refereeing errors as Manchester United suffered the shock of the season.

United lost to rock-bottom Sheffield United, the worst team in Premier League history after 19 games, at Old Trafford on Sunday night.

Kean Bryan's first-half goal was shrouded with controversy, while Oliver Burke also struck late on to cancel out Harry Maguire's equaliser.

Bryan's headed effort in the first-half was allowed to stand despite it appearing that Billy Sharp barged into David De Gea.

Minutes later, United had the ball in the net themselves through Anthony Martial.

However, the referee blew his whistle before the ball crossed the line, preventing VAR from checking if there was indeed a foul on goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale.

The replays suggest it was possibly a soft foul – and Solskjaer agrees.

On the first goal, he said: "Foul. Billy Sharp just runs into him. It's a foul.

He added on the Martial strike: "No foul. It's this kind of season. Inconsistencies. It's going to be unpredictable. That's two mistakes by the referee."

Solskjaer says there will be no inquest into the performance – but will be demanding United become more creative in the final third.

Solskjaer said: “When you concede two bad goals it will be difficult. We didn't create enough and didn't penetrate in behind to score enough goals.

"The magic was missing, that bit extra They defended well, fair play to them.

“We didn't have the right ideas or the solutions. They weren't there.

"Conceding the second goal was poor. So sloppy. We stopped getting out to the ball, and that's completely out of character.

“No big inquest. We are disappointed. We have seen so many results this season out of character.

"Today, surprised, but with the world as it is we had been the most consistent side. We dust off the sad feeling and go again.”
