Solskjaer says Henderson is "in with a shout" of usurping De Gea

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer admits Dean Henderson is "in with a shout" of replacing David de Gea this weekend.

Manchester United's No 2 filled in for the Spaniard during the team's 4-0 win over Real Sociedad.

Henderson's clean sheet coupled with his quick distribution saw him come in for praise.

His speed of thought helped set United away for their third, converted by Marcus Rashford.

Solskjaer claimed it had been a work on and said the Englishman was in contention this weekend.

However Premier League opportunities have been few and far between with the United boss underlining the qualities possessed by current first choice De Gea.

“Of course Dean is in with a shout," said the Norwegian.

"We pick a team on Saturday and Dean was very solid, good kicking and he could or should have had an assist for Marcus, which is another thing we worked on.

"He was clean in his handling, clean in his short passes and it was a good performance.

"He is maturing all the time but I have a very, very good goalkeeper in David [De Gea]. He saved us against West Brom so I can’t say to you now.

"I always speak to the players first before I say who’s playing and they will know.”

Henderson has only made two league starts this term but recently admitted he was content to bide his time.

The 23-year-old signed a new long-term deal upon his return from Sheffield United

He told the club's official website : “I’ve just got to keep ticking along, keep doing well and my best is yet to come.

"I’ll keep waiting for those opportunities to come and hopefully I can build a bit of momentum and show my best form.”

De Gea still has over two years left on his lucrative contract meaning Henderson's opportunities may continue to be restricted.
