Solskjaer 'rejected Man United's offer to revamp his coaches'

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer ‘turned down Manchester United’s offer to revamp his coaching staff’ before his sacking after several Red Devils stars ‘complained the training regime was too British’

  • Manchester United sacked Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager on Sunday morning
  • Solskjaer was dismissed a day after Saturday’s 4-1 defeat away to lowly Watford
  • Solskjaer reportedly snubbed United’s offer to change his coaching team
  • United’s stars reportedly complained that Solskjaer’s training was ‘too British’

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rejected the chance to revamp his coaching staff and regime that was branded ‘too British’ by senior Manchester United players, according to reports.

The Norwegian boss was sacked by the Red Devils on Sunday morning – one day after the club’s humiliating 4-1 loss at lowly Watford left him with a record of four defeats in United’s last five matches.

Michael Carrick has been placed in temporary charge of the Red Devils while the club looks for a new interim coach following the disappointment for Solskjaer’s sacking.

And according to ESPN, several United stars complained about Solskjaer’s coaching style during the final weeks of his career, claiming it was ‘too British’ – but the Norwegian turned down approaches by the Red Devils hierarchy to change his backroom team.

Solskjaer’s assistants included former United midfielder Carrick and Mike Phelan – who worked under Sir Alex Ferguson while Solskjaer was a player – with Northern Irishman Kieran McKenna also part of the team.

But the group of coaches were unable to stop a bad run of form for the Red Devils, with United losing 5-0 at home to Liverpool and 2-0 to Manchester City at Old Trafford.

Solskjaer failed to win five out of his last seven league matches in charge, leaving United seventh in the table on Sunday – while the Red Devils could drop even lower in the table should Tottenham and Everton pick up victories this weekend.

After United’s 5-0 loss to Jurgen Klopp’s Reds in October, Sky Sports pundits Graeme Souness and Jamie Carragher hinted that Solskjaer needed to revamp his coaching staff in order to bring about better results.

‘The manager might need some help, he talks about great staff, what I’m looking at there is that the manager needs different people around to make sense of what he’s not seeing,’ Souness said.

‘Manchester United should have the best coaches in the world,’ Carragher added. ‘Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is the manager, you need to have someone like Carlos Quieroz in as an assistant.

‘Yes Mike Phelan came in, but I don’t think he’s the coach. Michael Carrick, Kieran McKenna, they have never coached before in their lives. They can’t be all there at the same time. You have to have someone who has been there and done that.’

Fellow pundit Gary Neville, meanwhile, urged his former club to resist calls for wholesale changes and insisted United’s main problems were on the pitch rather than off it.

‘On the pitch, it’s not good enough. I was a manager for four months and I had a terrible time and this will put a massive pressure on him,’ he said.

‘The last thing I would do is turn on his staff? Are we sacking his staff? If the muck hits the fan, everyone gets a bit.’

Manchester United claimed Solskjaer remains a club legend at Old Trafford despite his sacking and said the Norwegian will ‘always be welcomed back as part of the United family.’

Sunday’s club statement read: ‘Ole will always be a legend at Manchester United and it is with regret that we have reached this difficult decision.

‘While the past few weeks have been disappointing, they should not obscure all the work he has done over the past three years to rebuild the foundations for long-term success.

‘Ole leaves with our sincerest thanks for his tireless efforts as Manager and our very best wishes for the future. His place in the club’s history will always be secure, not just for his story as a player, but as a great man and a Manager who gave us many great moments.

‘He will forever be welcome back at Old Trafford as part of the Manchester United family.’
