Solskjaer reacts to Diallo’s debut and identifies Man Utd’s next "top striker"

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was pleased with a “good start” to Amad Diallo’s Manchester United career – but it was striker Joe Hugill who caught the eye.

Diallo opened the scoring and added the sixth goal from the penalty spot in a 6-3 win over rivals Liverpool as he lined up for Neil Wood’s Under-23s side.

It was Diallo’s first appearance since his big money move from Atalanta was completed this month.

Solskjaer kept an eye on proceedings before his first-team took on Arsenal at the Emirates and gave his verdict to MUTV ahead of the game.

He branded it a “good start” for Diallo, who has impressed in first-team training sessions since his arrival.

He also reserved praise for Hugill, 17, as he labelled him a “top striker” – but also demanded to know why he let Diallo take the final penalty instead of netting his fifth goal.

Solskjaer told MUTV: ”Four goals by Hugill, he’s a top striker as well, we’re looking forward to seeing his development.

“Amad [Diallo] gets a good start and why Joe didn’t take the penalty himself to get five goals I’m going to ask him.”

After the game, Diallo shared a picture of him celebrating a goal and wrote: “Did you enjoy the show?”

Solskjaer confirmed Diallo’s involvement on Friday and said ahead of the game: “He’s been training really well and settling in.

“He's ready to get some game-time and match exposure.

“I'm looking forward to seeing him. [Liverpool?] There you go. Welcome to English football!”
