Solskjaer provides Rashford injury update after Man Utd's win over Liverpool
Ole Gunnar Solskjaer confirmed Marcus Rashford was set for a scan on his knee after the forward limped off in the dying moments of Manchester United’s thrilling 3-2 win over Liverpool.
The Red Devils set up a FA Cup fifth-round tie with West Ham thanks to Bruno Fernandes’ sublime free-kick with 12 minutes remaining at Old Trafford but the sight of Rashford hobbling down the tunnel will have put a slight dampener on Solskjaer’s evening.
Mohamed Salah set the tone in Sunday’s pulsating clash with an exquisite dinked effort over Dean Henderson before Mason Greenwood quickly equalised with a well-taken strike of his own.
Rashford put the hosts in front for the first time with a calm finish shortly after half-time but Salah once again got on the scoresheet from close range to set up an enthralling final period at the Theatre of Dreams.
Despite not having his best game, Fernandes, so often United’s hero in his opening 12 months at the club, put his team back in front with an unstoppable 78th-minute free-kick and the hosts kept hold of their narrow advantage to book their spot in the next round.
Asked about Rashford’s injury after United’s win, Solskjaer said: ‘Let’s hope [everything is alright].
‘His knee was bothering him so scan tomorrow and see where we are.’
On United’s performance against their bitter rivals, Solskjaer said: ‘Brilliant – you know when you go a goal, down the reaction of everyone was really good.
‘We played some really good stuff, good goals, we have to defend well against them and we managed to react well and of course towards the end there were some moments but we kept them away.
‘Great goal, good free kick. When you leave him out like I did today, he stayed about 45 minutes after training yesterday shooting free kicks so I was pretty confident he could score one if he got the chance.
‘He’s never happy with me when I tell him to go inside after training when he’s playing the next day so he got some practice yesterday.
‘Marcus has played up front, down the right and left and we felt if we could switch the ball early today we could attack them because Liverpool defend on the front foot so we have to be quick on the ball, we did that well.’
Solskjaer will no doubt be sweating over Rashford’s fitness ahead of his side’s league clashes with Sheffield United and Arsenal over the next week.
The attacker struggled with a back issue for much of last season but has started every United game bar one in the English top flight this term.
