Solskjaer is a poundshop Mourinho – stats prove hes not playing Man Utd way

Manchester United are quickly becoming the laughing stock of the Premier League top six after another dismal defeat at the hands of a so-called 'rival'.

Saturday's early kick-off was the most predictable result of the weekend and came to fruition before the half-time whistle had even blown.

David de Gea fumed, Harry Maguire looked bewildered, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer just appeared lost and fans must be left thinking 'what does this man need to do to get the boot?'.

Allowing rivals Manchester City to use Old Trafford as a training pitch for 90 minutes would have been a sackable offence in recent years.

Now, it prompts some United heroes to come out in defence of their pal and former team-mate.

The simple fact is. Solskjaer should be sacked as manager of Manchester United. He stopped playing "the United way" a long-time ago and now just looks like a poundshop Jose Mourinho.

The Red Devils sat camped in their own-half yesterday, allowing City all the time and space in the world as they tried desperately to defend their pride.

Didn't that used to be called "parking the bus?"

United had 32 per cent of the possession yesterday. They had 36 per cent against Liverpool two weeks ago.

Mourinho's final game in charge of United came at Anfield. His side had 36 per cent against Jurgen Klopp's Reds as they went down 3-1.

Weeks earlier, the 'Special One' was also powerless to stop City, giving them 65 per cent of the possession in a 3-1 Etihad defeat. At least Jose had the excuse of being away from home.

There are striking similarities between the way Solskjaer and Mourinho's United sides set up.

There also isn't much to split them in the result department.

At this stage of Mourinho's final season at Old Trafford, the club had 20 points and were nine points off league leaders City.

Solskjaer's United have 17 points and sit nine points adrift of table-toppers Chelsea.

However, Mourinho actually went on an unbeaten league run between September 29th and November 11th in 2018 – eventually receiving the boot in December.

Between September 25th and now this time around? United have lost to Aston Villa at home, drawn to Everton at home, shipped four goals against Leicester, been embarrassed by rivals Liverpool and Man City. Oh, and scraped through against Atalanta thanks to Cristiano Ronaldo.

The 3-0 reverse against Spurs is the only league win of that period.

If United's aim by sticking by Solskjaer is to restore a bit of pride, the board are more out of touch than we believe.

The pride left when City, Liverpool and Leeds started singing "Ole's at the wheel" on a matchday. Or when they were 4-0 down after 45 minutes two weeks ago.

Ole was never the man for the United job long-term. And it's time to hire an experienced head who can drag a failing side up off their knees and make them contenders again.
