Jesse Lingard penned an emotional statement on social media after his 22-year association with Manchester United came to an end.

The club confirmed on Wednesday that the 29-year-old would be leaving Old Trafford this summer upon the expiration of his contract.

Lingard – after the conclusion to his time at the club was overshadowed by anger at a lack of an Old Trafford send-off – responded in a statement on Twitter, revealing he was ’emotional’ but had ‘special memories and moments’ that he would ‘cherish forever.’

Jesse Lingard responded with a statement after Manchester Utd announced his departure

He said. ‘Born and bred a red. Over the last few weeks, I’ve been emotional about leaving a club that is family.

‘After 22 years I’ve had so many special memories and moments that I will cherish forever. Man Utd will always remain in my heart. A massive thank you. Lots of love Jlingz.’

One person who responded was team-mate and fellow midfielder Bruno Fernandes, whose arrival in January 2020 arguably diminished Lingard’s opportunities on the pitch.

The Portuguese said: ‘I enjoyed having you as a teammate. Keep the good energy never change that. Go and enjoy yourself always.’

Lingard posted a photo back in 2017 of himself as a child playing football with a United shirt on

Lingard’s lengthy spell with his boyhood club ended on a sour note last month when his brother hit out at his lack of send-off at the end of the season, calling United ‘classless’ for not making a tribute.

’20 years of blood sweat and tears, 4 domestic trophies, 3 cup final goal, not even a farewell. No wonder it’s Conference League next year,’ His brother Scott said on Instagram.

He was frozen out by Ole Gunnar Solskjaer (L) earlier in the season and could not convince his successor Ralf Rangnick (R) that he was first-team quality either

‘Class of 92, Busby Babes, you’re ran by people who don’t even know the offside trap. Classless and the fans need to realise.

‘Been there since nine years of age and didn’t even get a send off!!! Well done bro your family are proud.’

Lingard was a man reborn at West Ham in the latter stage of the 2020-21 campaign, scoring nine times and providing four assists, and he seemed nailed on to stay with David Moyes’ side, but he ended up going back to Old Trafford to form part of their squad for the new season.

Lingard scored the winner in the 2016 FA Cup final (with the trophy alongside Juan Mata)

Lingard enjoyed a great loan spell at West Ham in 2020-21 but the Londoners could not agree a deal to turn the deal permanent

He returned to become a squad member at United but made just two starts this season

But he did not see an increase of his game time – his first start of the campaign coming in the Carabao Cup in September.

In January there were chances for him to leave on loan, with both Newcastle and West Ham keen, but United were holding out for a pricey loan fee and both deals broke down.

The 29-year-old leaves United having made a total of 232 appearances, scoring 35 times. He enjoyed four cup wins during his time, and a prominent spell during the 2017-18 campaign – where he scored 13 times – saw him rewarded with a key role in England’s 2018 World Cup in Russia.
