Solskjaer already set to rest Ronaldo after just one Man Utd appearance

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has hinted he will rest Cristiano Ronaldo when Manchester United get their Champions League campaign up and running on Tuesday.

Ronaldo made the perfect start to his second Red Devils stint at the weekend, scoring twice on his Old Trafford homecoming to help Solskjaer's men claim a 4-1 win over Newcastle.

CR7 and co now turn their attention to the Champions League, with Swiss outfit Young Boys to come in their opening group-stage fixture.

Following his two-goal heroics on Saturday, United fans will be desperate to see Ronaldo get the nod upfront once again out in Bern.

“Cristiano looks after himself so much so I know he will recover quickly," Solskjaer said after Saturday's win against Newcastle.

“He has had a pre-season and, of course, it’s important that we get everyone up and running and to get him up and running and to give him 90 minutes.”

However, Solskjaer also warned supporters that, at 36 years of age, Ronaldo will not be able to feature in every game.

“It’s not impossible to leave him out. He is 36, Mason [Greenwood] is 19, so it’s the same," he said.

"I have to manage his [Greenwood's] minutes, and I have to manage a 36-year-old’s minutes as well.

“Of course there is a game on Tuesday. We will see what we do.”

Ronaldo's return has transformed United into serious Premier League title contenders this season, boosting their chances of becoming champions for the first time since 2013.

Solskjaer also brought in his former Real Madrid team-mate Raphael Varane this summer, and he believes both men serve as inspiration for younger members of the squad.

  • Ronaldo was allowed to break Man Utd new signing tradition – unlike Varane and Sancho

“I think seeing Raphael and Cristiano coming it’s raised everyone’s eyebrows because they are winners, they have won everything there is to win and put demands on themselves," the Norwegian said.

“The young boys, the rest of the team, they look at them and think that is how you stay at the top.”
