Six footballers who got richer after retiring – including Asamoah Gyan’s empire
Footballers earn the kind of money that the majority of people can only dream of.
A Premier League footballer on average receives around £60,000-per-week to play a sport they love – nothing short of a fantasy for many people growing up.
Manchester City maestro Kevin De Bruyne is currently joint top on the list of highest Premier League earners alongside Manchester United megastar Cristiano Ronaldo, receiving a reported £385,000 weekly.
But there are also some footballers who actually became even wealthier post-retirement due to their business nous and entrepreneurship.
Daily Star Sport looks at six footballers who managed to increase their wealth after retiring.
Asamoah Gyan
The Ghanaian striker is one of the most renowned African players of recent times and netted six goals across three World Cups – the most by any player from the continent.
His journey across various different countries towards the latter part of his career, including the UAE, China, India and Turkey, certainly left him a vast amount of wealth.
But his business forays across various areas, such as planes, real estate, bottled water, boxing promotion, petrol stations and rice and noodles, is what has resulted in his whopping £16.6million worth.

Louis Saha
Louis Saha represented Premier League clubs Man United and Everton during his 16-year-career, but it appears the Frenchman is just as savvy a businessman as he was lurking in the penalty box.
The 43-year-old’s company ‘AxisStars’ deals with connecting athletes and business brands so they can better negotiate their careers and even rate their experiences afterwards.
He came up with the idea in 2013 following retirement and has not looked back, working with stars like Didier Drogba, Robert Pires and Florent Malouda.
Mathieu Flamini
Mathieu Flamini’s aggressive and dogged playing style did not exactly scream biochemical entrepreneur – but that is exactly what the former Arsenal star has gone on to become.
He and business partner Pasquale Granata have formed a company estimated to be worth £20.26billion in GF Biochemicals, which produces Levulinic acid – a fuel made from plant waste that can be used to create environmentally-friendly plastics.
Flamini was also part of the team which created BIOCIRCE, Europe’s first master’s degree dedicated to promoting bio-economy education.

Michael Owen
Former Liverpool sensation Michael Owen had the world at his two feet as a youngster, winning a Ballon d’Or and becoming England’s youngest ever goal-scorer before injuries saw his career fizzle out.
But the 41-year-old managed to find even better luck in horse-racing, co-owning Manor House Stables which has seen winners at Ascot and the Dubai Gold Cup.
He has earned hundreds of thousands by selling them off and millions more through prize money, the most noteworthy coming from his favourite horse ‘Brown Panther.’
Owen today is believed to be worth around £36million.
Thomas Gravesen
The ex-Everton midfielder was a total maverick as a midfielder, entertaining fans with his on-pitch demeanour and his shock transfer to Real Madrid.
Yet his off-field life post-retirement has been even more shocking, having reportedly amassed over £70million through poker winnings as a Las Vegas high-roller.
The Dane once even lost £39million in one night at the table but has since made up for it and opted for a calmer life as a TV pundit in Denmark.
Robbie Fowler
Robbie Fowler is another ex-Liverpool striker to have made a fortune from horse-racing, following in his former teammate Michael Owen’s footsteps.
But the 46-year-old’s major money-maker is his property business, reportedly owning more than 100 in north-west England.
Fowler’s net worth today is believed to have exceeded £30million.
