Sir Alex Ferguson’s ‘shock’ Premier League shout proven right just a week later

Sir Alex Ferguson raised a few eyebrows when he named the team who'd impressed him the most on the opening weekend season, but he's been proven absolutely right.

The legendary former Manchester United manager was on pre-match punditry duty ahead of the Red Devils' clash with Wolves last Monday, and told viewers that Aston Villa had wowed him the most, even though they got spanked 5-1 by Newcastle.

"I watched Aston Villa and Newcastle and I can't believe the scoreline," Ferguson said. "Honestly, Aston Villa played fantastic football, and just [conceded] bad goals.

"Newcastle are going to be very difficult to beat at their own ground in particular, and the manager's done a good job there, but it's a surprising game of football, you can play teams off the pitch but don't score and that's what happened to Aston Villa."

Even Villa fans were taken aback by his comments, with one tweeting: "A reporter asked Sir Alex Ferguson which team impressed him the most on the opening weekend of the Premier League season. His response might shock some, including myself."

Another wrote: "Surely he's taking the piss? Or he had drank a fair bit of whiskey by time the game had kicked off?"

But Ferguson had the last laugh as Unai Emery's side shook off the rust from their opening day mauling by smashing four past Everton in one of the most comprehensive victories of the season so far.

Where will Aston Villa finish this season? Let us know in the comments section below.

"As if anyone doubted that Sir Alex Ferguson knew was he was talking about here," one fan gloated in the comments section of the clip after the game.

"Fergie is a genius. No one should ever doubt a word he says ever again," commented another.#

In fairness, Villa's form under Emery has been nothing short of superb with the club winning 14 of their 24 Premier League matches in 2023. Many even tipped them to push for a Champions League spot at the start of the season, though, unlike Ferguson, most probably retracted their prediction after their humbling at St James' Park.
