Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill fly out for Man Utd’s Europa League final
Sir Alex Ferguson and David Gill have travelled to Gdansk with the Manchester United squad ahead of the Europa League final.
United will take on Villarreal in the final on Wednesday and both Ferguson and Gill will be in attendance, having been pictured joining the squad on their flight to Poland.
The Red Devils are hoping to win their first piece of silverware under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer and they may be without club captain Harry Maguire.
The 28-year-old has missed United's last four games with an ankle injury and, despite being named in the squad for the final, he faces a late fitness test.
Speaking after United's 2-1 win over Wolves on the final day of the Premier League season, Solskjaer offered an update on Maguire's fitness.
"I'll wait for Wednesday," he said. "Maybe see if he can run on Tuesday. He's a bit away so I don't expect him to be ready, no. Of course, Harry wants to play.
"It's going to be up to the doctor to say how he is. As I’ve said, I don’t expect him to be ready. But I’m forever an optimist and still hopeful. He has to train on Tuesday when we’re over there. So it’s not many days. I don’t expect him to be ready."
9,500 fans are set to attend the final and veteran forward Edinson Cavani has admitted he is looking forward to playing in front of them.
Speaking to UEFA's official website : "I’ve always said that football is all about the people who make it happen and experience it with this passion which they give off to you in a stadium.
"It’s pure passion over the 90 minutes, you know, the connection between the player and the fan. All of these months with no fans has been tough.
"It’s been a loss to what the essence of football is, and I think the fact that now the fans will be coming back to the stadiums gradually will help a lot, all the more so at a team like Manchester United, which has a fiery and passionate fanbase.
"I think it’ll go great for them. Let’s hope that everything starts to go back to normal."
