Silva admits he hasn't seen anything like Chelsea's transfer business
Thiago Silva admits he has never seen ANYTHING like Chelsea’s transfer business this season – after new owner Todd Boehly splurged more than £600m in two windows – and insists new signings MUST settle quickly if they are to rescue their season
- Chelsea have spent more than £600m across two transfer windows this season
- In January, they bought in eight new additions in a dramatic £323m splurge
- But the Blues remain 10 points off the top four with just 17 games left to play
Chelsea defender Thiago Silva has admitted he has never seen anything like the transfer business that has taken place at the club over recent months.
Since the Blues were taken over by a Todd Boehly-led consortium back in May, they have spent more than £600million in just two transfer windows.
In January alone, they underwent a dramatic £323m transfer splurge, bringing in eight players, while they also confirmed that Christopher Nkunku will join in the summer for £63m from RB Leipzig.
Enzo Fernandez, Mykhailo Mudryk, Benoit Badiashile, Malo Gusto, Andrey Santos, David Datro Fofana, Joao Felix and Noni Madueke all pitched up at Stamford Bridge last month for varying amounts in the Boehly-backed spending spree.
It has led to Graham Potter having a senior squad of more than 30 players, while just three of their eight January signings could be added to their Champions League squad, with Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang – who only joined the club in the summer for £10.3m – left out.
Thiago Silva admitted he has never seen anything like Chelsea’s transfer business this season
The Blues have spent more than £600m in the past two windows, including spending more than £300m on eight January signings like Mykhailo Mudryk (L) and Enzo Fernandez (R)
The sheer number of first team options means that several players will have to be left out of each matchday squad by Potter.
And Silva, who at the age of 38 has enjoyed a professional career lasting more than 20 years – while also racking up more than 100 caps for Brazil – has never seen anything like the level of turnover and spending on players.
‘It’s the first time I’ve seen something like this in my whole career,’ Silva told the club’s official website.
‘This shows about the ambition of the club, how much the club wants to win. We had a lot of injury problems this year.
‘A lot of new players arrived and that takes time to prepare and get used to. We know we’re not having the best season, but I really believe that the positive thing is if we don’t start well, we can finish well.’
As Silva mentions, it has been a tough season for the Blues, with Potter’s side languishing in ninth place in the Premier League and 10 points off the top four.
They are also out of the FA Cup and Carabao Cup, but face a tricky Champions League last-16 tie against Borussia Dortmund this month.
It has been a tough campaign for Chelsea and Silva insisted the new signings must gel quickly
The Todd Boehly-led (R) consortium took over the club in May and have approved the spending
And the Brazilian has insisted that the new players need to gel with the team as quickly as they can.
He added: ‘So, that’s what we need to learn as a lesson, try to get settled in as soon as possible, because there’s no time left, because the Champions League will start again soon.
‘We need everyone to be ready, at the same page, we won’t be at 100 per cent, but the knowledge of each other has to be important at this moment to build chemistry.’
