Sheringham: Mourinho may take a national team job after Tottenham exit

‘Would anyone take a chance on him now?’ Jose Mourinho may have to take a national team job next after toxic Tottenham exit, says club legend Teddy Sheringham, with his dull brand of football a big turn-off for Spurs fans

Jose Mourinho’s next step in management may have to be at international level after his toxic exit from Tottenham, according to Teddy Sheringham.

Amid the chaos of the breakaway European Super League, Spurs announced Mourinho’s sacking on Monday after just 17 months in the job.

Though Spurs remain in touch with the Champions League places and take on Manchester City in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final as they bid to win a first trophy since 2008, Mourinho was criticised for a negative brand of football.

Spurs legend Teddy Sheringham questioned whether another club would take a gamble on Mourinho after things turned toxic at Chelsea, Man United and now Tottenham

Tottenham remain in touch with the top four, plus are in Sunday’s Carabao Cup final against Manchester City, but there was criticism of Mourinho’s style of football

He also fell out with a number of players during his time in charge, froze others out entirely and, according to reports, spent four hours telling the squad some ‘home truths’ even after his sacking.

And White Hart Lane legend Sheringham questioned who would offer Mourinho another job after things unravelled in similarly spectacular fashion at Chelsea and Manchester United.

‘Nothing amazes you any more in football, you never know what’s around the corner. He had a tough time at Chelsea, then again at United, then it feels like it’s gone the same way,’ he said.

‘I really don’t know where it takes him next, whether anyone would take a chance on him now.

‘I think he has always talked about the Portugal job later on in life. I don’t know whether he sees himself later on in life at the moment.

‘Maybe Portugal may like that stability of a very tactically aware manager. Who knows what is next for Jose.’

Mourinho was surrounded by reporters and photographers outside his home after being dismissed by Tottenham on Monday

The Portuguese manager reportedly delivered some ‘home truths’ to the players before he finally left the Tottenham training ground

Sheringham believes Spurs fans were never going to warm to Mourinho for his dull and conservative approach to games, even if they were challenging for the title.

He added: ‘When the team got to the top of the division [late last year], it was exciting but there were still grumblings from the Tottenham fans.

‘What more could you ask for, from the outside? You’re top of the league, you have brought this manager in to do that job and there were still grumblings.

‘That just shows the mentality of the Spurs fans and what they want to encounter week-in, week-out. They want to be entertained along the way.

‘It is about winning things, that is what we’re in football for, but there is a certain way Tottenham feel about playing.

‘Jose might have won the championship playing the George Graham way but I’m sure that would have been a long and winding grind.

‘Let’s get back to the Tottenham way, to enjoy watching us play.’

The ankle injury Harry Kane suffered against Everton is a major concern ahead of the Carabao Cup final on Sunday

The England striker did train on Friday and will hope to be fit to play in the Wembley final

Mourinho’s departure leaves 29-year-old Ryan Mason, who was coaching in the club’s academy, in charge for Sunday’s Wembley final.

Mason won his first game in charge against Southampton on Wednesday night but it remains touch and go whether star striker Harry Kane, who is struggling with an ankle injury, will be fit to face Pep Guardiola’s City side.

As a former striker himself, Sheringham understands precisely how Kane will be feeling.

‘It’s got to be the worst feeling, it’s racing against time,’ he said.

‘He will be desperate to play and if he says ‘I’m 90 per cent fit, I want to take a chance’ that will be music to Ryan Mason’s ears.

Tottenham’s challenge is to stop Man City winning the cup for the fourth season running

‘Because you need your top players on the pitch against Man City, it’s the toughest game you could think of in the Carabao Cup final.

‘Against City, you have got to have everyone playing eight out of 10 at the least, a player on nine out of ten and a ten out of ten performance.

‘All pulling together because it’s a 90 minute duel against City, you know they will test you in every seconds.’

Sheringham, who was speaking on behalf of Spurs sponsor cinch ahead of a drive-in screening of the final, added: ‘Guardiola has taken the game in this country to a whole new level, everyone is trying to copy him and challenge him in his ways.

‘I don’t think everyone has the right idea about it, he nails it. When you are defending against it, it’s so hard because they are testing you every minute. I just love that.’
