Alan Shearer has subtly made his feelings on last week’s row between the BBC and Gary Lineker clear on Twitter after he was caught in the crossfire. It comes after the Beeb decided against punishing those who stood back from broadcasting at the weekend in solidarity with Lineker.
Coverage of the latest round of Premier League fixtures was heavily impacted by employees taking action after the BBC asked Lineker to sit out of Saturday’s Match of the Day.
The presenter had come under fire after posting a tweet earlier in the week slamming the UK government’s immigration policy, comparing it to 1930s Germany.
His suspension was not received well, and his colleagues soon withdrew from the show to support Lineker.
MOTD pundit Ian Wright was the first to confirm he had informed the BBC that he would not be working without Lineker, and Shearer followed an hour later.

Within 72 hours, the BBC reinstated Lineker, including in their statement that there would be an independent review of guidelines for social media use.
Shortly after the announcement, The Times journalist Henry Winter tweeted that the broadcaster’s bosses needed to understand how important Match of the Day is to English football.
He wrote: “BBC bosses need to appreciate better how important Match of the Day is and what Gary Lineker brings to it.
“In an era of teams being more tactically sophisticated, the insight that Lineker & pundits bring is even more important. They spend hours watching games, then air analysis.”

And Shearer seemingly agreed with Winter’s sentiments, liking the post on his official Twitter account.
After airing a 20-minute show, normally 80 minutes, of highlights with no commentary, the BBC will hope MOTD returns to normal this weekend.
Lineker will likely be back in the chair after confirming they have resolved their differences, with Shearer and Wright joining him in the studio.
