Shaw takes opposite stance to Maguire after Man Utd capitulation to Liverpool
Luke Shaw has contradicted captain Harry Maguire following Manchester United’s humiliating defeat to Liverpool.
The Red Devils capitulated as they fell to a 5-0 loss at the hands of fierce rivals Liverpool at Old Trafford on Sunday which has piled the pressure on manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.
Mohamed Salah netted a Liverpool hat-trick to add to early strikes from Naby Keita and Diogo Jota while Paul Pogba saw red for Solskjaer’s side due to a reckless lunge in the second half.
United’s defence was a disorganised mess as they shipped four goals before the half-time interval, the first occasion this has happened at Old Trafford in Premier League history.
Not only does it appear the United players weren’t singing from the same hymn sheets on the pitch, their post-match comments don’t appear to match up either.
While United captain Maguire sparked outrage with the Red Devils’ fanbase following his comments, left-back Shaw has taken a different stance altogether.
In a grovelling post-match apology, Maguire told reporters: “I’m here because I have to be” in reference to his obligatory media duties after games.

However, Shaw spoke out as he wanted to hold his hands up and not shy away from accountability, in the opposite response to his club captain.
“Not good enough,” Shaw declared shortly after the 5-0 demolition. “I know of course this game is a team sport, a team game, but I think as individuals we need to be accountable of some of the performances today.
“And that’s why I’m here now. I’m not hiding in there [in the dressing room], not speaking.
“I come out, I say wasn’t good enough and I speak on behalf of myself, not the team. I’m accountable for my performance and it wasn’t good enough.
“Like I said, I’m not here to speak about the team. We know we can be better but for me also I need to be better than I was today. That’s why I come here now, not hide, speak to you, and tell it how it is.”
United travel to Tottenham Hotspur in the Premier League on Saturday as they look to bounce back before another Champions League outing against Atalanta and the small matter of the Manchester derby on 6 November.
