F1 starlet Oscar Piastri has sensationally denied that he's to take over from Fernando Alonso at Alpine next season, despite Alpine themselves claiming they'd signed him in a press release.

The Australian took to Instagram on Tuesday to assert that he had not signed any agreement with the French-owned F1 team and had no plans to do so in the future, amid reports linking him with a move to McLaren.

"I understand that, without my agreement, Alpine F1 have put out a press release this afternoon that I am driving for them next year," the 21-year-old wrote. "This is wrong and I have not signed a contract with Alpine for 2023. I will not be driving for Alpine next year."

Earlier this week, Aston Martin confirmed that they'd snapped up two-time world champion Alonso as replacement for Sebastian Vettel, who announced that he will retire at the end of the season.

Alpine team principal Otmar Szafnauer initially told reporters on Tuesday that he was unable to confirm Piastri as Alonso, despite ongoing talks with the youngster, before the team put out a statement later on that afternoon claiming Piastri had signed after all.

However, the fact that there were no from Piastri in Alpine's press release fuelled speculation that they had jumped the gun – a fact that was later confirmed when Piastri released a statement on social media denying that an agreement had been reached.
