Manchester United will have a born winner if they sign Sergio Ramos on a free transfer this summer. United legend Rio Ferdinand has labelled Ramos one of the greatest defenders of all time ahead of a possible exit from the Bernabeu.

United are missing players with a track record of winning trophies.

Edinson Cavani is by far the most successful in that regard in the Red Devils squad.

However, the Uruguay forward looks set to leave at the end of his contract this summer.

Bringing in a player such as Ramos would help Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side get over the line on the biggest of occasions.

Ramos has won four Champions Leagues with Real Madrid as well as five La Liga titles.

He also helped Spain win two European Championships and the World Cup earlier in his career.

Speaking ahead of the first leg of Real’s Champions League quarter-final against Liverpool on Tuesday, Ferdinand explained how Ramos always turns it on at the most important moments.

“Ramos is the character, he’s the talisman at this football club,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport.

“He not only defends but scores goals for them as well, he does everything. On big occasions, he’s always stepped up.”

That is exactly what United need right now.

They have reached four semi-finals under Solskjaer and have lost every single one of them.

They may have the chance to end that rut this season in the Europa League, but have to get past Granada in the last eight first.

Ramos leaving Real seems almost inconceivable after 16 years in the Spanish capital.

He has won everything there is to win in the game, as Ferdinand noted.

“He has to be up there with the best,” the pundit added.

“With what he’s done in the game as well, it’s not just about his performances but winning.

“He’s a relentless winner and he’s got that character. When the big moments come, he’s always stood up.”

But as his contract winds down, the belief that Ramos’ future may be elsewhere grows.

United are in the market for a defender and have been linked with another Real player in Raphael Varane.

But they would go a long way to find someone with more of a winning mentality than Ramos, even if at 35 it would only be a short-term deal.
