Scholes puts his foot in it with Sky Sports comment while presenting on BT Sport

Manchester United legend Paul Scholes was left red-faced after accidentally giving Sky Sports a shout out on live TV – while presenting for rivals BT Sport.

Scholes was on punditry duties on Sunday night as Manchester United battled to a hard-fought 3-1 win over Newcastle; a result which moved them back up to second in the Premier League.

After the game, the former Red Devils and England midfield maestro was tasked with analysing the game alongside BT Sport presenter Jake Humphrey and commentator Jermaine Jenas.

Scholes also reflected on his glittering playing career under Sir Alex Ferguson, in which he praised his former manager for strengthening his squads with big-money signings.

But, while discussing the excitement he used to have when hearing about the club's transfer pursuits, Scholes accidentally name-dropped fierce rivals Sky Sports.

When asked how important new signings were, he said: "Massively. They were exactly what we needed every year.

"Whether it was big players or middle of the road players. You needed that competition. You could win the league by 25 points but so what? Go and strengthen your team.

"We never knew (they were happening). You never thought 'oh blimey'. You were excited. When you were on holiday and put your Sky Sports News on…"

Humphrey then light-heartedly made Scholes aware of his choice of words, before the midfielder said: "Oh sorry, put your BT Sport on…

The 46-year-old attempted to keep a straight face and added: "You're excited. You're hoping them to get the deal over the line. You want to play with the best players."

Scholes was speaking after United got back to winning ways in the Premier League, as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's men saw off the threat of relegation-threatened Newcastle.

After managing just one victory in their previous five top-flight matches, Solskjaer felt Thursday's 4-0 Europa League shellacking of Real Sociedad showed his side had got over their recent slump.

While they fell short of those standards on Sunday, second-half goals from Daniel James and Bruno Fernandes goals secured a 3-1 victory against embattled Newcastle after Allan Saint-Maximin had cancelled out Marcus Rashford's fine opener.

The result moves United back into second and within 10 points of ruthless Manchester City, while defeat for Bruce at his old stomping ground leaves the 17th-placed Magpies perched just three points above resurgent Fulham.
