Scholes’ Chelsea criticism baffling after Brentford heroics and record so far

Paul Scholes made some confusing remarks on social media after Chelsea beat Brentford 1-0 in their Premier League encounter.

The former Manchester United midfielder took to Instagram on Sunday morning to pose a question about Chelsea’s defensive ability following the victory against the newly-promoted side.

The Blues kept a fifth clean sheet of the season, but they had to rely on the heroics of goalkeeper Edouard Mendy in the second half. Even still, they moved back to the table of the Premier League table on Saturday evening with their victory.

“Just a question,” Scholes wrote on Instagram. “If your keeper is MOM does that mean your team defended well?”

The west London side had been knocked off the top spot earlier that day as Liverpool ran riot and dismantled Watford 5-0 at Vicarage Road.

Indeed, Mendy made a man-of-the-match six saves during the game, notably putting over Christian Norgaard’s acrobatic effort in the dying embers over the crossbar.

Mendy has been a superb signing ever since joining Chelsea from Rennes last September, ensuing the side have kept 20 clean sheets in 38 Premier League matches.

During the encounter on Saturday, he played behind a makeshift backline, with Malang Sarr, Andreas Christensen, and Trevoh Chalobah.

Thomas Tuchel was forced to make the changes as Antonio Rudiger and Thiago Silva were unavailable.

Rudiger only just returned from international duty with a back injury, while Silva had been playing for Brazil early Friday morning.

Ivan Toney, Saman Ghoddos and Pontus Jansson were all scuppered from close range by Mendy.

Tuchel’s men have only conceded three times in eight games and defended like warriors to deny Brentford throughout the contest.

Brentford might be newly promoted but they had only lost a single game prior to the encounter., picking up points in six of their last seven games.

That’s what makes Scholes’ recent comments on Instagram all the more peculiar.
