Ryan Reynolds ‘very interested’ in buying ice hockey team after Wrexham takeover

Wrexham owner Ryan Reynolds is reportedly very interested in snapping up Canadian ice hockey team Ottawa Seniors having got a taste for the world of sport.

The death of former owner Eugene Melnyk has sparked the beginning of the process to sell the NHL franchise, which could see them displaced from Canada's capital city. It has led to reports that Reynolds could swoop in to make sure that the Seniors remain in the Ottawa region.

According to People Magazine, the Hollywood star is interested in buying the team, which has been put up for sale with Galatioto Sports Partners being retained to take care of the process. At the moment, the club is in the hands of Melnyk's two daughters, who inherited the franchise.

There are early plans in place to build a new arena on the Lebreton Flats, which is closer to downtown. However, whether a new owner is in place before the completion of that project remains to be seen.

On Tuesday, an Ottawa Seniors fan asked Reynolds to buy their club and the Deadpool star replied with a thinking face emoji, further adding fuel to the speculation.

Reynolds was born in Vancouver and is a huge sports fan, where ice hockey is the national sport of Canada and already has the taste for ownership in the world of sports. Along with fellow actor Rob McElhenney, he purchased National League side Wrexham.

Since then, the two have begun looking to push the Welsh side into the Football League while also filming a documentary on their progress called 'Welcome to Wrexham'.

Last year after Wrexham missed out on the playoffs, Reynolds said: “I’ve only been the owner of a football club for a very short time. So far I’ve found it to be very time-consuming, emotionally exhausting, financially idiotic and utterly addictive.”
