Roy Keane has claimed that as long as Scott McTominay and Fred are Manchester United’s starting midfield pairing, they will not win any big trophies. The former Red Devils captain was speaking after watching his old side lose 4-2 to Liverpool at Old Trafford.
The hosts actually went 1-0 up against Jurgen Klopp’s men, before Diogo Jota equalised and a Bobby Firmino brace put them firmly in control.
Marcus Rashford halved the deficit, but Mohamed Salah’s late goal ensured United would suffer their second home defeat in just 48 hours.
The loss came hot on the heels of the 2-1 home reversal against Leicester City.
In that fixture, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer opted to make 10 changes, with the players on the fringe of his starting line-up failing to make an impact.

And Keane felt that the last two results have highlighted just how much United’s squad is lacking in comparison to newly-crowned Premier League champions Manchester City.
“Ole looks shell shocked, it’s been a tough few days, it’s been a tough few days, the performance tonight, nowhere near good enough,” he said on Sky Sports’ post-match coverage.
“On the back of that Leicester result, where you start playing your squad players who you think are good enough to get Manchester United back to winning league titles…absolutely no way.
“I think all of United’s short-comings have been shown up in the last couple of days.

“We’ve praised United the last few months, but this squad is so short of competing with Man City for the title.”
He went on to criticise Solskjaer’s first-choice midfield pairing, suggesting that without an upgrade, the game’s biggest prizes would continue to elude them.
“I just look at the performance of the two midfielders tonight, McTominay, he’s a good honest player,” Keane continued.
“They’ve got Fred – as long as them two are playing in midfield for Manchester United, they will not be winning big trophies.
“OK they’ve got the Europa League final in a few weeks, but they’re only in that because they came up short in the Champions League.
“The last few days…I can’t believe how short they really are.”
United have now shipped 27 goals at Old Trafford, the third highest total in the top-flight and Keane believes their end of season form could force Solskjaer into a more active summer window.
He added: “I think Man City are so far ahead of this Man City squad, it’s scary.
“I think Ole will reflect on the last few days and think, ‘We need three or four big players to come in this summer, at least’.
“That’s easier said than done, the recruitment has got to be right and you’ve got be given money to spend.”
