Sunderland were hammered 6-0 by Bolton in what was Lee Johnson’s last game in charge

Former Hull boss Grant McCann was spoken to yesterday, while other names in the frame include Alex Neil and Neil Lennon.

Keane remains the preferred choice of many within the club, but today’s talks are seen as crucial as both parties get a better feel for one another.

An announcement on Lee Johnson’s replacement is not expected before tomorrow’s visit of Doncaster, but a decision could well be made by the end of the day.

It is 13 years since Keane quit as Sunderland boss, citing differences with former owner Ellis Short. He had taken over in August, 2006 with the team second bottom of the Championship but come the end of the season they were champions.

Former Celtic boss Neil Lennon is among the other candidates to have been interviewed

Keane first took the job at the Stadium of Light in 2006 and led the club to promotion

Keane eventually stepped down as Sunderland manager before taking a job with Ipswich

They then survived in 15th position in the Premier League but Keane walked away in December of the following season.

However, the Irishman remains incredibly popular on Wearside and those inside the club are aware of the potential his appointment could have on creating momentum, especially coupled with the return of Jermain Defoe this week.

The ownership believe the dressing-room needs a winning culture instilled within it, and Keane’s name has been spoken about with great enthusiasm.

Sunderland are currently third in League One, two points outside the automatic promotion places.
