Ronaldo says £305m contract offer was true – but new transfer rumour ‘garbage’

Cristiano Ronaldo has said that the £305m contract offer he received was true but that a new transfer rumour about him is "garbage".

During the summer transfer window, after telling Manchester United that he wanted to leave the club, Ronaldo reportedly received a massive contract offer from an unnamed club in Saudi Arabia. The 37-year-old has now confirmed that he did receive the offer and has added that reports no clubs want him are "garbage".

Ronaldo made the revelations during the second part of his interview with Piers Morgan, also revealing that he had other offers during the summer too.

“It’s true, yes it’s true…" he explained. "But what the press keep saying, the garbage, is that nobody wants me, which is completely wrong.

"And I was happy here to be honest, I was motivated to do a great season here. But they continue to repeat that nobody wants Cristiano. How they don’t want a player who scored 32 goals last year, with national team?”

On his decision to reject the offer from Saudi Arabia, Ronaldo went on to say: “It's hard, it's hard. But in the same way, I thought that I was very happy here; that I was still capable to score goals…

"I still believe that I can score many, many goals and help the team because I still believe that I'm still good and capable to help national team – even Manchester United. But if you don’t feel around you that the energy’s on your side, it’s difficult.

“Of course, the criticism is gonna exist all the time. ‘Ah he’s 37, he’s not the same’. But I want to see if some guy of my age can maintain the level that I show… Yes, in this moment, I feel very, very good….

"I believe that I'm going to do an amazing World Cup and I’m prepared, physically and mentally… But Piers, it is what it is. Life’s good, I’m good, my mental [outlook] is good. I’m happy to do this interview with you. I know we’re gonna generate many polemic.”

Ronaldo's future at Old Trafford has been thrown into further doubt following the release of his bombshell interview with Morgan, with the veteran forward already out of contract at the end of the season.

Sporting have been linked with an emotional move for the Portuguese hero, while Chelsea were also touted with interest, following Todd Boehly's reported desire to sign him during the summer. Ronaldo also talked up Arsenal's quality and how much he admires Mikel Arteta in the interview – so watch this space!

United, meanwhile, are understood to be exploring their options with regards to terminating Ronaldo's contract. Meanwhile, Gary Neville has urged the club to sack his former team-mate in the coming days.
