Romelu Lukaku has officially signed on the dotted line for the second time as a Chelsea player, but he comes in for his next spell at the club as their new highest earner, according to reports. When Lukaku first arrived at Stamford Bridge 10 years ago, he was one of the best paid teenagers in world football on a reported £70,000-a-week deal.

In the decade since his first foray into playing in Europe’s elite leagues, Lukaku has established himself as one of the world’s best strikers.

His exploits with Inter Milan last season helped them knock Juventus off their perch in the Serie A.

That goalscoring form has now taken full circle in returning to Chelsea as the new talisman in their bid to clinch the Premier League title.

Thomas Tuchel’s side were missing an out-and-out striker last season with Tammy Abraham out of favour under the German head coach.

Chelsea have smashed their previous transfer record to bring Lukaku back to west London, splashing out £97.5million to re-sign the Belgian.

And he’s set to become Chelsea’s highest earner on his long-term contract at Chelsea.

According to The Athletic, Lukaku could be earning up to £450,000-a-week after image rights and bonuses are taken into account.

It’s a significant increase on the wages Lukaku was earning in Italy with Inter.

DON’T MISS

But Lukaku’s wages also tower over the next highest earner at Chelsea – N’Golo Kante.

The France international was the club’s former top-earner on a reported £290,000-a-week deal.

And Lukaku is keen to repay the faith Chelsea have shown in him, insisting his main goal is to win trophies with the club he supported as a boy.

“I’m happy and blessed to be back at this wonderful club,” said Lukaku.

“It’s been a long journey for me: I came here as a kid who had a lot to learn, now I’m coming back with a lot of experience and more mature.

“The relationship I have with this club means so much to me, as you know. I have supported Chelsea as a kid and now to be back and try to help them win more titles is an amazing feeling.

“The way the club is going fits my ambitions perfectly at 28 and just coming off winning Serie A.

“I think this opportunity comes at the right time and hopefully we can have a lot of success together.

“Since I left Chelsea, it’s been a long journey with a lot of ups and downs, but these experiences made me strong and the challenge is to try to help the team win some more trophies. I can’t wait to get started and to help the club achieve more success.”
