Chelsea are leading the chase for Romelu Lukaku, according to fresh reports in Italy, with the Belgium striker mooted with a possible return to Stamford Bridge.

The 27-year-old has been enjoying things so far in Serie A with Inter Milan, scoring 60 goals in 85 appearances since joining from Manchester United in 2019.

Inter also currently sit top of Serie A and have the chance to win the league for the first time in 11 years.

However it seems the Italian outfit will face a fight to hold on to their prized asset with Lukaku linked with an exit from the San Siro this summer.

According to Calcio Mercato, Chelsea are leading the race to sign Lukaku and bring him back to the club he left in 2014.

It is thought that should the Blues not land top target, Erling Haaland, then they will go after Lukaku. It seems Roman Abramovich is desperate to hand Thomas Tuchel a striker this summer as the German looks to launch a title bid next season.

This doesn’t spell good news for Timo Werner, however. The striker arrived from RB Leipzig only last summer but has yet to live up to his lofty transfer fee, netting just 10 goals in 40 appearances.

But should Lukaku return he has the chance to stake his claim as Chelsea’s out and out striker – something he struggled with during his first spell at the club.

Lukaku, in fairness, was given few chances but believes much of the blame rests with former boss Andre Villas-Boas – who he is still unable to forgive.

“Di Matteo told me that I would stay with the group until after the final,” he told Het Laatste Nieuws.

“He thought everyone should come along, including the ones who were suspended and the few boys who were not in the Champions League squad. I am also grateful to him for that.

“This win is one of the things I’ve always dreamed about. You want to celebrate something like that with the team at that time. That is nice in itself at the age of nineteen.

“I am happy for the whole club, but there is one man who took a lot from me: the previous trainer (Villas-Boas). I will never forgive him for that.

“Once I had to play in the front left, another time in the front right. You don’t develop that way.

“Then at some point you have to think about yourself. So I told the club what I thought of it. I know, Villas-Boas was also under pressure.

“But that’s why he didn’t have to treat me like that. Di Matteo approached me completely differently, he immediately involved me in everything. That should have been much earlier. Really, I never forgave the previous coach.”
