Liverpool star Roberto Firmino offered a strong response to his critics after Jamie Carragher revealed he was worried for the Brazilian’s future. Firmino has struggled in front of goal this season, but is determined to become more potent for the Reds.
Firmino’s place in the Liverpool front three has been a source of discussion this season.
The Brazilian striker lost his spot earlier in the season after a poor run in front of goal.
Diogo Jota made an immediate impression after joining from Wolves in a £41.5million deal, and for a while it seemed that the new arrival would take Firmino’s place in the side.
However, the 24-year-old Portuguese star suffered an injury earlier in the season and subsequently missed a large part of the campaign.
Firmino regained his place in the side as a result, but still struggled in front of goal.
The Premier League and Champions League-winning forward has scored just six times in 29 league outings, and hasn’t scored in the league since the end of January.
And speaking on Wednesday, Firmino admitted he knows he hasn’t been good enough this season, but is determined to improve.
“I charge myself a lot,” he said. “I know that I’m not at my best moment compared to the last few years.
“I always want to be helping with goals and assists, but that hasn’t been happening, unfortunately.
“But I don’t give up. I’m always looking to improve to help my team to be better, together with the group.
“I have to evolve day after day.”
Liverpool hero Carragher admitted earlier this season that he believed Firmino was the most likely of the Reds’ front three to leave.
He said that compared to Sadio Mane and Mohamed Salah, Firmino just doesn’t offer enough to warrant keeping his place.
Carragher said: “I am still confident Mane and Salah will start scoring goals again. I must say I am worried for Firmino.
“He has never been seen as ‘the’ goalscorer. That is the responsibility of the other two, but he is there to chip in.
“When they are not scoring, he has to be a bigger goal threat.”
