Robbie Williams felt that he made the wrong decision regarding his setlist during his private gig for the England squad at the World Cup in Qatar. Harry Maguire organised for the pop icon to stage a show for his team-mates during their camp, before Gareth Southgate’s side were dumped out of the tournament at the quarter-final stage by France.

Williams visited the England camp on Wednesday, a few days before the clash with France and performed a poolside concert at the team hotel, where he sang duets with several players. But the former Take That singer admitted that he made a wrong call in singing the iconic Three Lions (Football’s Coming Home) song from The Lightning Seeds, Frank Skinner and David Baddiel.

In a chat with former England and Arsenal goalkeeper David Seaman on his Seaman Says podcast, Williams explained how the night went and his regret over the song. “I started with Sweet Caroline,” Williams said. “But then I started to sing it and I stopped, and I texted Harry Maguire and I said ‘Who thinks they are a singer in the camp?’ and he was like ‘James Maddison actually’.

“So I got James Maddison up to sing it with me and they loved that, and that was fun and then I sang Don’t Look Back In Anger and then I sang Angels. But then this is the mistake I made, this is the mistake I made.

“I sang Football’s Coming Home, but I got the feeling as I am singing it that, I don’t know if it was either a bad omen or they don’t like the song, or it annoys them but I just got this feeling in the air that the song that I chose to sing, this is the wrong song to be singing now.”

When asked if he stopped singing the song, Williams admitted that he did not and powered through. “Once you’re committed, you’re committed,” he added. “But let me tell you, three and a half minutes of they’re not digging this, three and a half minutes of that can feel like an eternity.”

After the awkward exchange, Williams then revealed further details of the gig where he dueted with captain Harry Kane and then had another request from Manchester City star Jack Grealish.

“I actually later on sang My Way with Harry Kane,” Williams said. “And then Jack Grealish turned up later and was like ‘I was hoping you’d get me up to do She’s The One, I really like She’s The One.”

On Thursday, Williams posted a video on Instagram showing him standing alongside Marcus Rashford and Maguire at the private gig, as he plugged his concert that night at Doha Golf Club which had not been sold out at the time.
