Rio Ferdinand uses Man Utd’s Cristiano Ronaldo chant to welcome Jadon Sancho
Manchester United fans enjoyed a day they have been looking forward to for some time on Friday – and Rio Ferdinand was no different.
Jadon Sancho’s move to Old Trafford from Borussia Dortmund was a long time coming, but the £73million deal was finally announced yesterday.
Sancho has signed a five-year contract with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side with the option of another and will wear the No.25 shirt next season.
United tried to sign the 21-year-old winger last summer, only to be rebuffed by Dortmund’s firm asking price of £108m.
They returned with renewed vigour this summer and worked quickly to secure the England international – much to the enjoyment of former United defender Ferdinand.
Like many United fans, Ferdinand took to Twitter yesterday to celebrate the transfer and he also provided supporters with an idea for a chant for the 2021/22 season.
He wrote:
“Viva Sancho
“Viva Sancho
“Running down the wing
“Hear United sing
“Viva Sancho…”
The lyrics are a nod to Cristiano Ronaldo, one of United’s best ever wingers, who enjoyed the support of the Old Trafford crowd between 2003 and 2009.
Below he included a clip of an interview with United’s assistant manager Mike Phelan, who toldFerdinand’s YouTube channelwhy the club had fought so hard to land Sancho.
“He’ll bring some sort of cutting edge to us and a little bit of something different,” he said.
Will Jadon Sancho be a success at Manchester United? Have your say in the comments section below.
“Manchester United have been brought up on wide players, players that play with width, that can commit one v ones, open up areas for other players and be creative high up the field.
“We feel as those, at such a young age, he has those qualities. Premier League experience, he needs, even though he has done quite a bit in his career already.

“We just think that Jadon playing well can be really constructive and really creative and maybe unlock those doors that we’ve found difficult to do.”
Sancho, who was part of Manchester City’s academy between 2015 and 2017 before joining Dortmund, described the transfer as “a dream come true”.
The winger arrives at United with quite the CV having scored 50 goals and registered 57 assists in 137 appearances for Dortmund.
He is United’s second-most expensive signing after defender Harry Maguire, who cost £80m from Leicester City in 2019.
