Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand believes the Red Devils’ lack of consistency is behind Cristiano Ronaldo’s recent struggles. The former Real Madrid and Juventus hitman ended a seven-match goal drought by opening the scoring in United’s 2-0 home victory against Brighton and Hove Albion.

Ronaldo smashed Ralf Rangnick’s side into the lead with a ferocious strike from the edge of the penalty area.

His international compatriot Bruno Fernandes assured the points in the dying stages of the match, getting on the end of Pogba’s pass and slotting home past Robert Sanchez.

Nevertheless, the victory over the Graham Potter’s side will do little to qualm the doubt and reservations towards the Red Devils.

And Ferdinand believes a huge lack of inconsistency, not just game by game, but halve by halve is behind their issues.

“That’s the problem, the inconsistency,” Ferdinand said before their victory over Brighton.

“Worrying about what Man Utd are going to turn up, what United team is going to come out in the first half compared to the second half, actually.

“I keep saying the same thing, Jeckel and Hyde performances with each half. They’ve got to find some consistency.”

Before their vital victory over the Seagulls, United had only recorded one Premier League victory in their last three matches.

They had taken the lead against Southampton and Burnley, only to be pegged back and held too frustrating draws on both occasions.

While the Reds are currently sitting in fourth position, they could soon find themselves outside the Champions League places yet again.

Sixth placed Arsenal have three games in hand on the Red Devils and will overtake the Reds if they manage to win take six out of the nine available to them.

Mikel Arteta’s side take on a struggling Brentford side in their next match, before a tumultuous home fixture against Wolves.

The latter have emerged as dark horses for the top four, having won four out of their last five matches and maintained the second best defensive record in the whole division.

Nevertheless, Ferdinand believes United will always have a chance to win, if they are able to supply Ronaldo.

“This man here [Ronaldo]… In this competition you cannot bet against him coming up trumps,” Ferdinand added.

“He’s the king of this competition in terms of goals and deciding big games.

“With him in the team in this competition, you’re always in with a chance.”
