Rio Ferdinand fawns over Chelsea star after superb display in Real Madrid win
Chelsea dominated Real Madrid on Wednesday night to progress to the Champions League final, and while there were plenty of good performances in a blue shirt, Rio Ferdinand had special praise for midfield superstar N’Golo Kante.
The Blues beat the Spanish giants 2-0, securing a 3-1 aggregate victory as they book their place in the final alongside Manchester City.
The goals were scored by Timo Werner and Mason Mount, but it was a typically all-action performance from Kante that earned praise from Ferdinand.
The former Manchester United defender felt the Frenchman showed so much more than he is known for, with a creative, attacking side to his game under Thomas Tuchel at Stamford Bridge.
‘I think Kante showed other sides of his game, we all know him as a holding midfielder, someone who has energy, pace, can get around the park, win second balls, always on the front foot, retrieves the ball so well,’ Ferdinand said on BT Sport.
‘He was actually the person who instigated the best attacking plays for Chelsea today.
‘Being on the front foot, winning it and feeding someone else to go and have an opportunity.’
Tuchel was full of praise for Kante in the build-up to the game and the German was proved right.
‘He is the guy you need to win trophies,’ said Tuchel before the match. ‘Where can he elevate? He’s the top guy. That’s why we are so happy he is here.
‘I was dreaming about this player, fighting for this player in any club I was coaching, and now he’s my player. He has won every trophy apart from the Champions League. Hopefully he will do everything so we get this trophy.
‘For me he is an example and has an unbelievable input in any team in the world. He is key, and he will be key against Real Madrid and I hope in the best way possible.’
