Manchester United icon Rio Ferdinand has slammed his former club’s recent performances and believes there have been three key failures under interim boss Ralf Rangnick. Ferdinand thinks there has been a lack of progress since the German replaced Ole Gunnar Solskjaer at the end of November.
Rangnick has endured a tough couple of months since being appointed on a deal until the end of the season.
He has only suffered a solitary defeat in his eight matches but performances have been underwhelming.
That was compounded by the Red Devils letting slip a 2-0 lead at Aston Villa on Saturday.
Goals by Jacob Ramsey and Philippe Coutinho earned Villa a 2-2 draw after Bruno Fernandes’ brace had put United into a comfortable lead.
Rangnick’s spell has been overshadowed by reports of player unrest, with Anthony Martial and Paul Pogba both linked with departures.
The 63-year-old appeared to have a public falling out with the former after suggesting Martial had refused to be involved in the game against Villa. He has since insisted that the issue is resolved.
But former defender Ferdinand has now told Rangnick the three key failures of his short tenure.
The 42-year-old ex-England captain believes game management has been an issue, with United struggling to hold onto their leads. He has also claimed that Rangnick has failed to improve the players’ and the team’s performances.
“Progress? I’d say first 20 minutes, half an hour max,” Ferdinand said on BT Sport while analysing the draw with Villa ahead of United’s visit to Brentford on Thursday evening.
“The big thing for me is they fail to manage their games. In the game, game management is key.
“He spoke about improving players and team performance when he got here – I haven’t seen that consistently at all if much in the majority of the players.
“It’s been disappointing to see in that respect.”
Rangnick, who is expected to take on a two-year consultancy role within the Old Trafford hierarchy following the end of the season, believes his team have improved.

United had beaten Villa in the FA Cup only a week before their Premier League clash. However, Rangnick believes his side played better in the latter fixture.
“If I compare our two games, in the cup and in the league, we did a lot better in the league game at Villa Park,” the former RB Leipzig boss said on Wednesday.
“The performance in the first 70 minutes was really good. I liked our movements, I liked our game in possession of the ball, the structure of the game, the way that we pressed, even when we had to defend our own box, we did that well.
“We need to have a similar performance against Brentford.”
