Reguilon has ‘break clause’ in Man Utd contract and may be sent back in January

Seven Man Utd transfers Sir Jim Ratcliffe wants answers for as trio set for January exits

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has admitted that Sergio Reguilon’s loan deal includes a break clause which could see him sent back to Tottenham in January. The left-back was recruited to provide injury cover over the first few weeks of the season, but a wave of returning players could see him frozen out of the starting XI.

Tyrell Malacia came into the new season with an injury, and fellow left-back Luke Shaw joined him on the sidelines in August. The double blow left Ten Hag desperately short, prompting a season-long loan move for Reguilon at the end of the summer.

The 26-year-old has seen plenty of action since, making seven appearances in the Premier League, two in the Champions League and another in the Carabao Cup. He also played the full 90 minutes on Saturday as Bournemouth romped to a stunning 3-0 win at Old Trafford.

That is unlikely to help Reguilon’s chances of remaining with the Red Devils for the whole campaign, particularly with Shaw back from injury and Malacia set to return after the New Year.

Following a dismal afternoon against the Cherries, Ten Hag confirmed in his post-match press conference that the agreement struck with Spurs for Reguilon included a break clause, adding: “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.”

The Spanish international earned his stripes at Real Madrid’s esteemed academy before making a name for himself during a terrific loan spell at Sevilla in 2019/20.

Reguilon’s move to the Premier League started promisingly but steadily fell away, and he has not made an appearance for Spurs since the campaign before last. He now faces a crucial few matches to convince Ten Hag of his worth, or risk being shipped back to north London.

It may be a case of sink or swim for the on-loan full-back as Bayern Munich, Liverpool and Aston Villa all lie in wait before the end of the month. And Ten Hag will be desperate for a turnaround in fortunes as speculation swirls around his future in the Old Trafford dugout.

Reacting to Bournemouth’s shock win over the Red Devils, former England striker Michael Owen wrote on X: “I just can’t see any positives for [United] at present.

“Knocked out of the cup, about to go out of the Champions League at the group stage, no chance of winning the league, average signings, shocking performances, manager falling out with players, no identity on the pitch, poor team selections… Things need to change as this team is going nowhere. Oh, and up next is Bayern Munich followed by a trip to Anfield.”
