Real Madrid captain Sergio Ramos has tested positive for Covid-19, the club have revealed.

The centre back has been missing for the capital club over the past few weeks since returning from international duty with Spain with a calf injury.

Ramos watched from the stands at the weekend as Zinedine Zidane’s men beat fierce rivals Barcelona to take them top of LaLiga, before Atletico Madrid reclaimed top spot following their 1-1 draw with Real Betis.

Ramos was already out of Real’s Champions League quarter-final second-leg tie against Liverpool, and he has not travelled to the UK for the clash at Anfield on Wednesday night.

According to Marca, Ramos still got involved off the pitch during the weekend’s Clasico – acting as a peacemaker as Barca players remonstrated with officials following their failure to award a late penalty for a foul on Martin Braithwaite.

Ramos is currently in the middle of a contract stand-off with Real Madrid.

The 35-year-old’s deal runs out this summer, and though he wishes to stay on at the Bernabeu, he is holding out for a two-year deal.

However, while the club are willing to offer him the preferred length of terms, they want the captain to take a 10 per cent wage cut, according to AS.

Despite the club looking to agree the cut with all players, this is proving something of a stumbling block for the Spain captain.
